  • Denomination of Origin of Tequila

Did you know that more tequila is bottled inside the United States than is bottled in Mexico?  These are known as “Mixto” tequilas, which are the largest percentage of tequila produced.  It’s nearly impossible to verify and certify that these products comply with regulations when bottled outside the Denomination of Origin.

Where is the Denomination of Origin?

Under Mexican law, in order for a spirit to be labeled as tequila it can only be produced in specific regions of Mexico using only one type of agave, Agave Tequilana Weber Blue Variety Mayahuel, commonly known as the Blue Agave.  Originally, the legal growing region was in the state of Jalisco, but over the years the government has extended that to include some counties in the states of Michoacán, Guanajuato, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.

These areas encompassing 180 municipalities in the five states are the only areas in the world that can produce tequila.

Why is this important to you?

Each bottle of our agave spirits comes with the technical data for that production right on the label so that you know exactly when, where, and how the tequila was produced and transported from the producer to you.  This information includes the farm where the agave was grown, who harvested the agave, when it was planted, when it was harvested; how it was cut; how it was roasted, fermented, and distilled and by whom.  We can even tell you how it was transported.

We believe that the best way to convey to you the importance of these production factors is to be completely transparent so that you can see what goes into each bottle of Siembra Spirits products.
